Ankeny - Biggest bass so far!

The water levels are so high that it has washed away all the moss that I usually find bass under.  It is now anyones game as they were just cruising the perimeter, especially by a drain that had to be full of all sorts of yummy eats.

This is the biggest fella so far.  Compare that mouth to my large arbor reel.  Not to bad for these little urban ponds.

Lake Halice: Bass

I had a buddy land a pretty decent sized bass down here on his son's mini fishing rod, so of course I had to check it out.

It is a pretty little "private" pond.  You could fish one side pretty okay, but yes, I wound up in the trees.  I really need to learn some of those fancy spey casts I keep watching on YouTube.

Anywho, caught some small bluegill, but finally landed this guy.  We only fished for about an hour so no complaints here!

Farm pond north of Earlham.

Some family friends have a farm pond on their property and I finally got ahold of the owners.  Nathan and I headed out after a day of cutting firewood.  THE GRASS CARP ARE GIGANTIC!  Apparently, the owners put 10 grass carp in the pond over 20 years ago.  I got two to bite, but couldn't maneuver either of them in.  I a pretty sure the are around three feet long.  Absolutely insane.  Other than that, we just caught handful of your typical freshwater fish.

Bass on the 5WT - Ankeny

So.  Who knew this fatty would be in a little urban pond?  My buddy Nathan and I were casting just outside the moss and working our way around the perimeter and BOOM!  This chunker was on my line.

Above is Hobo Joe, found him asleep under one the benches by the ponds.  Just kidding, this is my bro Nathan and he is learning how to fly fish this year.  His first bass ever, congrats!

Magic Carp ride.

I caught my first carp!  This was one of my main goals for this summer and it happened early!  It was my first cast of the day (black BH wooly bugger, per usual) and I dropped it right in front of a group of four feeding carp that I could see subsurface.  Thank you polarized sunglasses.  It was a 12-15 minute battle and it was incredible.  It's like catching a semi truck on a 5WT.  No big splashes, but it did run me into my backing.  I am addicted and hope for some more carp encounters this year.

Bass on the 5wt - Ankeny, IA

Went out with my fiancé to a couple of ponds that are on the north side of town.  Fished about 4 feet off the banks and in a bunch of moss on the other.  Caught a five largemouth and some crappie.  We fished into the dark, and I was casting based on sound and timing.  This is when the big daddys (for these size ponds) came out to eat.

Just a few iPhone pics for ya.

Fly Fishing 2015.

It is almost the one year anniversary of me (and my fiancé Emily) learning how to fly fish!  I got out a lot last year (Duluth, MN, Fayetteville, AR, Omaha, NB) but mostly in central Iowa.  Since I fished so much, and enjoyed it, I figured it would be a nice addition to the website.  I am hoping to post every time I go fishing.  I'll share what I used, where I was and (hopefully) what fish I landed.

Ankeny urban pond located off 1st street behind the Wells Fargo.  I went with a couple buddies and we were hoping to land some bass after work.   We got to Ankeny about 7PM and fished until 8:40PM.  The pond was littered with nasty Canada geese.  Action was slow until about 7:30 and then things really picked up.  I landed 10 smaller sized largemouth bass.  Hopefully some of these guys can grow over the summer.  All were catch and release.

5wt, sinking leader, 4x tippet and a black bead head wooly bugger.   I was letting them sink and doing a medium and stead strip pattern in.
